You will probably stop for lunch and definitely for a tea and time to absorb the scenery. From the pass you zig-zag down through pine forests to the burbling river at Phortse Tenga. It takes most of the morning to regain the main trail which brings you easily to the charming monastic village of Pangboche. Take some time to explore this extremely important gompa and check for yourself the veracity of the ‘Yeti’s skull’ said to lay within.
Day 08: Pangboche to Dingboche(4410m, 5 hours)
A very different day from the previous one. You are now largely on the gentler slopes of the lower valley crossing the wide floor and the now grey-blue river colored by its large mineral load. There’s a gentle but steady ascent to Orsho before dipping down again to a sturdy bridge across the river and a final up to the village of Dingboche. This afternoon may feel surprisingly tough – the slopes don’t seem much but the altitude will be taking effect needing some extra mental and physical effort. Dingboche, a small Sherpa village is surrounded on all sides by towering Himalayan peaks including Pokalde, Ama Dablam and Tawoche.
Day 09: Dingboche Acclimatization
To help your adjustment to the ever increasing altitude you spend two nights here in Dingboche letting your body recover and refresh at a constant sleep height. You still follow the maxim of ‘climb high, sleep low’ so will take a gentle walk up the long Imja khola valley towards Chukkung and the glittering folds of glacier visible opposite. Returning to your lodge for lunch the afternoon is free to read, explore, get to know the locals and catch up on domestic chores. Overnight Dingboche
