Lhasa Kailash Tour itinerary
Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu
Pick up from the airport/transfer to
your hotel. Time permitting, you may
want to start exploring the capital city
(local guides are available). In the
evening, meet the group for dinner and a
trip briefing.
Day 02 : Kathmandu Sightseeing
After breakfast, we set out for a guided
tour of Kathmandu's holy sites,
including Pashupatinath and Boudanath,
before heading back to the hotel for
lunch. The afternoon is spent making
final preparations for the trip. Staff
members can assist you in buying or
renting any missing gear and you may
check any unnecessary luggage. Group
dinner in the evening.
Day 03 : Flight Kathmandu -Lhasa
Drive to Airport for the flight from
Kathmandu to Lhasa on Air China. This
one hour thirty minutes Trans Himalayan
Flight will give you an opportunity to
have an aerial view of the Mt. Everest
and other Himalayan Peaks. Arrival at Gonggar airport around 14.00 hrs. Local
time. After clearing immigration and
customs it will be a two hour drive to
cover the 93 km. to Lhasa which is
situated at an altitude of 3670 meters.
Upon arrival we check in at the hotel,
right in the heart of the old city.
Day 04/05 : Lhasa Sightseeing
During these two days in Lhasa we visit
the Potala palace, Drepung and Sera
monasteries, the Norbulinka and of
course the famous Jokhang temple
including the surrounding Barkhor.
Day 06 : Drive from Lhasa to Gyantse
(3900m.)
you begin your overland adventure with a
full day drive to Gyantse. Along the way
you cross the Kamba la (4794m) and the
Karo la pass (5010m), both grant
spectacular views. After the Kamba la
you come to Yamdrok tso, also known as
the Turquoise Lake.
Day 07 : Drive from Gyantse to
Shigatse (3800m.)
In the morning visit Gyantse stupa and
monastery followed by a two hour drive
to Shigatse. Here see the enormous
Buddha in the famous Tashilumpo
monastery. The seat of the Panchen Lama.
Day 08 : Drive from Shigatse to
Tingri (4350m.)
The journey today brings you over two
high passes with fine views. For lunch
we stop in the small town of Lhatse.
Depending on how much time we spend
during the morning in Shigatse we will
stay overnight in Tingri where you will
meet Nepali staff for your onward
Journey.
Day 09 : Drive from Tingri to Saga
(4450m.)
On the first long driving day over the
sandy and rocky land of Tibet, other
things like lake, nomads chasing
thousands of yaks and sheep keep you
busy. By the late afternoon you will
cross Bhramha Purtra River way to
typical Chinese and Tibetan town, Saga
for night.
Day 10 : Drive from Saga to Paryang
(4500m) 285 km / 8 hrs.
Our jeeps and trucks roll through the
gigantic valleys following the various
rivers through the grazing lands of yaks
and sheep. The landscape is highlighted
by snow capped peaks rising out of the
distant sand dunes. Depending on the
season, many Tibetan nomads and traders
in traditional dress will inhabit this
area. Over Night at Guesthouse / Camp.
Day 11 : Drive from Paryang to Lake
Manasarovar (4558m) 298km / 9 hrs
Make sure you have some photos left for
the panoramic view of the Himalayan
range as you cross the Lalung la pass
(5050m). In the evening relax in
Kathmandu.
Day 12 : Drive from Manasarovar to
Darchen (4600m) 60km.
Lake Manasarovar (4500m) Lake
Manasarovar is regarded as the most holy
of all of Tibet’s many lakes. According
to Hindu and Buddhist cosmology the four
great rivers of the Indian
sub-continent, the Brahmaputra, Sutlej,
Ganges, and Indus all arise from the
lake. It is said that Lord Vishnu
floated in it for an eternity, dreaming,
until the life force stirred, and out of
the water’s infinite potential sprang
forth all of creation. This day offers a
wonderful opportunity to see the great
lake Manasarover with mt. Gurula
Mandhata (7728m) on south and Holy
Kailash on the north. After bath and
Puja drive to Tarchen via Chiu monastery
and hot spring. Over Night at
Guesthouse.
Day 13 : Darchen
A day to prepare for the Kora (Those who
are interested and fit can trek or ask
jeep driver to take Austapad for Puja,
please be ready for tips to driver for
the extra work). We can readjust the day
as per the needs.
Day 14 : Drive form Darchen to
Tarboche (5 km) trek to Dirapuk (4800m).
Our first day of trekking around Kailash
begins at Tarpuche. As we make our way
along the route we pass numerous
chortens as well as the sky burial site
of the 84 Mahasiddas. We will also have
wonderful views of cascading creeks,
streaming water falls and the mighty
west face of Kailash. We will pass the
Chukku Gompa and 5 hrs later arrive at
the Dirapuk Gompa where we will set up
camp for the night. Total hiking for the
day will be 15 km 7 hrs. Over Night at
Camp.
Day 15 : Trek to Zutulpuk Gompa
(4790m).
The hardest but holiest day of the
pilgrimage. We will cross through a
rocky expanse dotted with stone cairns
draped with the clothes offered by
pilgrims as a spiritual sign of death.
Gaurikunda is one of the holiest sites
to view/ visit from the top. Further
hiking brings us to the accent up to
Dolma-La pass (5630m). After a nice
break at the top of the pass we will
head down the steep trail to our
eventual campsite at Zutul-Puk Monastery
(the cave of miracles where Milarepa
meditated) Total hiking for the day will
be 18 km 8 hrs. Over Night at Camp.
Day 16 : Trek to Darchen & drive to
Manasarovar
Trek to Tangsar Tangmar and drive to
Manasarovar Hor a 3 hrs walk brings us
to where the river emerges onto the
Borkha plain. Our jeeps will be waiting
to transport us to our camp at Lake
Mansarovar. Over Night at Camp.
Day 17 : Drive to Paryang (277km) 7-8
hrs.
Day 18 : Drive from Paryang to Saga
(185 km) 7-8 hrs.
Day 19 : Drive to Nylam or Zhangmu
(296 km) 6-7 hrs.
Day 20 : Drive back to Dhulikhel or
Kathmandu (163 km) 9-10 hrs.
Day 21 : Transfer to airport for your
onward flight.
